Why Train for a Marathon in Toronto?

Toronto is one of North America's best marathon cities. The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (October) draws 30,000+ runners, and the GTA offers year-round running infrastructure — from the Martin Goodman Trail to the Don Valley ravines. Whether you're targeting the Toronto Marathon, the Hamilton Road2Hope, or the Ottawa Marathon, the GTA has everything you need to train.

Choosing Your Race

Toronto & GTA Marathons: - Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (October) — Fast, flat, BQ-qualifying - Toronto Island Run (Various distances) — Scenic island course - Mississauga Marathon (May) — Suburban, well-organized - Hamilton Road2Hope Marathon (November) — Challenging, beautiful route - Around the Bay 30K (Hamilton, March) — Canada's oldest road race Half Marathons: - Sporting Life 10K (Toronto, May) - Toronto Women's Run (September) - GoodLife Fitness Victoria Park Run - Numerous parkruns across the GTA (free, every Saturday)

16-Week Marathon Training Plan

Phase 1: Base Building (Weeks 1-4) Run 4x/week, building from 30km to 40km weekly volume. Include 2 easy runs, 1 tempo run, and 1 long run. Long runs along the Waterfront Trail from Humber Bay to the Beaches are perfect — flat, scenic, and well-supported. Phase 2: Build (Weeks 5-10) Increase to 50-60km/week. Add interval sessions at the U of T track or East York track. Long runs extend to 28-32km. Practice fueling — GU gels, Maurten, or real food. Phase 3: Peak (Weeks 11-13) Highest volume weeks (60-70km). Your longest run hits 32-35km. These weeks test mental fortitude. Run with your local crew — accountability matters. Phase 4: Taper (Weeks 14-16) Reduce volume by 40-60%. Maintain intensity on shorter runs. Rest, sleep, hydrate. Trust your training.

Toronto Run Clubs

Running with a group transforms your training. Toronto's run club scene is world-class: - Parkdale Roadrunners — Welcoming, all paces, Wednesday evenings - Black Toe Running (multiple locations) — Expert-coached, structured workouts - The Runway (Liberty Village) — Social runs + strength - Toronto Frontrunners — LGBTQ+ inclusive, Saturday mornings - Longboat Roadrunners — Competitive, long history - North York Runners — North GTA, family-friendly - Brampton Road Runners — Serving Peel Region - Oakville Runners' Club — Halton Region's finest Most clubs are free or under $50/year.
