How to do the Overhead Press

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, barbell at collarbone height
  2. Grip the bar just outside shoulder-width
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes
  4. Press the bar straight overhead, moving your head slightly back to clear your chin
  5. Lock out at the top with the bar directly over your spine
  6. Lower under control back to your shoulders

Form tips

  • Don't lean back excessively — keep your ribs down
  • Push your head "through the window" at the top
  • Full lockout at the top for maximum benefit
  • Exhale as you press, inhale as you lower
